Julie Mundell is an American singer and songwriter who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. Known for her folksinger style reminiscent of the 1970s icons Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, Julie began writing music in junior high school when she received her first guitar from her brother Tom.
Her casual style was no doubt influenced by her years as a summer camp counselor at Camp Rancho Formosa, located outside of Nashville in Brown County, Indiana. Julie often performed at campfire gatherings, as well as at numerous venues from state fairs to coffee houses.
Julie was active in the folk music scene at Purdue University in the 1970s, and was featured on campus at numerous musical gatherings, one appearing on the 1978 Purdue University football poster.
She was a leader of one of the well-known folk groups at the time who sang at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center, where she continued writing music for various settings of the Psalms for Sunday masses. In 1984, one of her musical settings to Psalm 15, Those Who Do Justice, was selected by the Catholic musician Carey Landry for inclusion on his album “Companions on the Journeys”, and eventually made it into the Catholic music hymnal Glory and Praise, published by Oregon Catholic Press (digital version from OCP).
Julie’s lifestyle as a person of faith is often reflected in her music and song topics. She has written music for weddings and gatherings of people with varying faith perspectives. Since college days, she has been active in a number of civic and faith-based activities that promote dialogue and community. She has performed at a number of interreligious gatherings from Rome, Italy to Nairobi, Kenya to Sao Paulo, Brazil, and was recently a featured performer at the 2018 World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland where Pope Francis met with Catholics gathered from all over the world.
Julie has been married to her husband John for almost 40 years, and they have four children (Sarah, Andy, Dan, Jimmy) and two grandchildren (River and Rocket).
